Byron Wallace is an associate professor in the Khoury College of Computer Science and director of the undergraduate program in data science. His research centers around natural language processing and machine learning, with an emphasis on applications in health.

Wallace aims to solve methodological problems, including model interpretability, learning with limited supervision from diverse sources, human-in-the-loop/hybrid systems, and the trustworthiness of model outputs. His work also entails developing language technologies to automate (or semi-automate) biomedical evidence synthesis and developing models for processing notes in electronic health records.

He’s received support from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation (including a CAREER grant), and the Army Research Office, among others. Before joining Northeastern, Wallace earned his doctoral degree in computer science from Tufts University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
