Artificial Intelligence: An Ethical Overview

Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Director of Research at EAI, and Meritxell Borrás, Director of the Catalan Data Protection Authority, presented at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
Discrimination, inappropriate uses of facial recognition, unethical practices in e-commerce are some of the problems that AI presents. In particular, we will discuss the state of the technology, regulations, cultural differences, cognitive biases, and we will also ask ourselves what we can do to face these challenges in the near future.

Biography
With a degree in Pharmacy and an MBA from the University of Barcelona, and a diploma in Political Leadership from IESE in Madrid, Meritxell Borràs has held positions of maximum responsibility in the Government of Catalonia, the Parliament of Catalonia and at the local level. She was head of the School of Public Administration of Catalonia in 2016, from where she led the training on the new General Data Protection Regulation for Catalan administrations. She also participated in the deployment of the Transparency Law to the Generalitat de Catalunya and in facilitating its implementation in the city councils.
