Founder of the AI Ethics Lab and AI Ethics Lead for the Institute of Experiential AI (EAI), Cansu Canca, will be part of a panel titled, “Can We Trust AI?” at the institute’s launch event, Discover Experiential AI happening at the Northeastern University campus in Boston on April 6, 2022, starting at 9 a.m. You can still register to attend for free, in-person and virtually.
If anyone understands trustworthy AI, it is Cansu. Her lab was one of the first to help practitioners put AI ethics into practice. She realizes that you can’t just flip a switch and turn on artificial intelligence overnight.
Implementing AI responsibly the right way means finding the best design solutions and navigating policy structure for business practices. Cansu says the conversation about exactly what ethical AI is, needs to happen across disciplines. Weighing the ideas of individuals in areas from law to medicine to finance will help frame a strong reliability structure that ensures collaboration between AI systems and humans.
“Putting together different stakeholders with different backgrounds is extremely important to creating AI systems that are beneficial,” says Cansu, a philosopher in the tech world.
Cansu is joining a diverse group of experts at the institute’s launch event. Her panel, “Can We Trust AI?” will consider the ethical issues of assigning human values of trust to algorithms. The talk, moderated by the institute’s Director of Research Ricardo Baeza-Yates, will get to the heart of how to design AI systems to improve human life and human intelligence.
“While AI has great potential to technically help us solve a number of ethical issues that currently exist in our manual world, if we use it wrongly or put systems in place that are just amplifying harm, we are going to get ourselves into bigger trouble,” says Cansu.
Which leaves her with one critical question about the future: “How do we make sure that we use the advantages of AI systems to make our lives better than they are?”
Register now for Discover Experiential AI to hear more from Cansu and the rest of the “Can We Trust AI?” panel. The hybrid event happening at Northeastern’s Boston campus will celebrate the launch of the institute’s foundational new research center and applied AI Solutions Hub.
