Ricardo Baeza-Yates Addresses EU Parliament Committee on Bias in AI Systems

Societal problems like racism and sexism cannot be solved by technology alone. Furthermore, technology can actually amplify biases that are already existent in society. These ideas, and strategies that can be implemented on a societal level to combat these biases, were presented to the European Parliament in November 2021 by our Director of Research, Ricardo Baeza-Yates. He joined other experts representing diverse views from research, industry, and civil society during a Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Age. The topic was “AI and Bias,” and provided AIDA members and the public with a variety of perspectives on the impact bias can have on the development of AI and ways to reduce bias in AI systems.
