Ryan Qi Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, an affiliated faculty member in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, and the associate director of research on social media at the Boston Area Research Initiative.

At the intersection of data science and computational social science, Ryan’s research focuses on the human movement and perturbation of natural and human-made disasters, as well as mobility equality in big cities. In the category of Best Paper Award, he earned honorable mention from the American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Management in Engineering.

Before joining Northeastern, as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University, Wang studied social inequality and segregation using big data from Twitter. He earned his doctoral degree from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. There, Ryan was also a Via Teaching Fellow and the first doctoral fellow for BioBuild. He obtained his master’s degree in construction management from Michigan State University and his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Tianjin University.
