Angela Kilby

Angela Kilby is an assistant professor of economics in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. As a health economist, she studies the health and welfare effects of health care policies, focusing on pain treatment and policies to alleviate the opioid crisis. Within the goal of translating AI to clinical use and practice, her recent research explores algorithmic fairness concerns arising from machine learning algorithms deployed to preemptively identify individuals most likely to suffer from opioid use disorder. She also applies natural language processing to social media to extract policy-relevant datasets on the experiences of those with opioid use disorder.Before joining Northeastern, Kilby was a National Bureau of Economic Research/National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellow in aging and health research. She also worked as a researcher at the Jameel Poverty Action Lab and became a Luce Scholar after earning her doctoral and bachelor’s degrees in economics from MIT.
