Gregory Abowd is Dean of the College of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering. He holds affiliate professorships in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the Bouvé College of Health Sciences.

Over more than two decades, Abowd has initiated bold and innovative research efforts in human-computer interaction and made groundbreaking discoveries in ubiquitous computing. He pioneered innovations in autism and technology, health systems, and he founded the non-profit Atlanta Autism Consortium to serve and unite various communities connected to autism research and services.

Abowd has received numerous awards for his contributions to these fields, from becoming an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) fellow to being inducted into ACM’s Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) Academy, the most prestigious honor for researchers in human-computer interaction. He also received the ACM Eugene Lawler Humanitarian Award for his work in autism and technology.

Abowd has served on the founding editorial board of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Pervasive Computing and as founding editor-in-chief of Foundations and Trends in Human-Computer Interaction and Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable, and Ubiquitous Technologies.

Before joining Northeastern, Abowd was a Regents’ Professor and the J.Z. Liang Chair in the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in honors mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and a Master’s of Science and a doctoral degree in computation from the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship.
