Julia Stoyanovich is an institute associate professor of computer science & engineering at the Tandon School of Engineering, an associate professor of data science at the Center for Data Science, and director of the Center for Responsible AI at New York University (NYU). Her research focuses on responsible data management and analysis practices: on operationalizing fairness, diversity, transparency, and data protection in all stages of the data science lifecycle. Additional focus areas include technology policy, Responsible AI education, and public engagement. Julia has developed and teaches courses on responsible data science at NYU and co-created an award-winning comic book series on the topic.

Julia was appointed to serve on the New York City Automated Decisions Task Force by former Mayor Bill de Blasio. She also established Data, Responsibly, a consortium that studies the foundations of responsible data science and builds tools that translate insights into data science practice. A National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner, Julia earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in computer science from Columbia University and her bachelor’s degrees in computer science and mathematics and statistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is also a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery.
