Karina Gilbert is a full professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She is the head director and co-founder of the Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Center (IDEAI). Her focus areas include machine learning, Responsible AI, intelligent decision support systems, explainability, health, environmental systems, and tourism.Among her many affiliations, Karina is the vice dean of equity and ethics for the Official Professional Chamber of Informatics Engineering of Catalonia and a member of the ethics committee for data in the presidency department of the Catalan government. She is an expert group member and co-writer of the Catalan Strategy for AI for the Catalan government. She represents IDEAI in the Centre of Innovation for Data tech and Artificial Intelligence and the Artificial Intelligence Research Alliance. She is the founder of the Commission donesCOEINF addressing the gender gap in informatics engineering and the founder of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence. Karina is co-founder of the Spanish Council of Professional Colleges of Informatics Engineering of Spain, was co-ambassador of Women in Data Science for Barcelona in 2021 and 2022, and was an advisory board member for the Transparency Agency of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in 2021. She is also an advisory board member of the Catalan Observatory for Ethics in AI, an elected board member of the International Environmental Modeling and Software Society, and a member of the Catalan Intersectoral Working Group in AI.

She is the editor of the Joint Research Centre journal Environmental Modeling and Software and a member of the International Association of Statistical Computing Committee on Computational Statistics and Data Mining for Knowledge Discovery.

Karina is an IDEAI representative in the IAbiomed research network for AI health applications and the Task Force for Health in Planetic. She is also a representative for the Spanish Council of Professional Colleges of Informatics Engineering in the International Commission of Seals for the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation and a representative of COEINF in the standardization UNE committee for Artificial Intelligence since 2019, and the committee for Big Data since 2017.

Karina won the 2022 Ada Byron Award and was a finalist in the 2022 AMETIC awards. She was a creu casas honorific mention in 2021 and 2022 for the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, and a finalist in the European Social Services Awards in 2021. She also won the 2018 Women in ICT award from the Generalitat de Catalunya.She has a bachelor’s degree in informatics engineering with specialties in computational statistics and AI. She also has a doctorate in computer science and a postgraduate degree in higher education teaching. Karina enjoys dancing, singing, and cooking for friends.
