Lee Makowski
Affiliate Faculty
Lee Makowski is a professor and chair of bioengineering, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology, and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests focus on the molecular basis of biological processes.
Makowski has written over 100 scientific research papers and numerous review articles on innovative analyses of biophysical data with a focus on x-ray and neutron scattering and x-ray imaging. He was an American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers Fellow and the recipient of the Northeastern University Dean’s Award for Meritorious Service. He previously served as a senior scientist and Biosciences Division Director in Northeastern’s Argonne National Laboratory.
Before joining Northeastern, Makowski was a faculty member of biochemistry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, a professor of physics at Boston University, and the director of the Institute of Molecular Biophysics at Florida State University. He also worked as a program director at the National Science Foundation in biology and materials science.
He completed his postdoctoral research in structural biology at Brandeis University after earning a doctoral degree in electrical engineering from MIT and a Bachelor of Science in physics from Brown University.
