Matthew Sample is a philosopher and research scientist at the Institute for Experiential AI, with expertise on the interaction between knowledge practices, technology, and governance. His work combines insights from (bio)ethics, political theory, and the social sciences to solve societal challenges associated with a wide-range of technologies, from AI to organoids. You might find him in a lab or a clinic, analyzing regulatory policy, or out talking with the public. In the process, Matthew has collaborated with STEM colleagues internationally, at places like the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, MIT, UW Center for Neurotechnology, iGEM, and the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

Matthew received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Washington in 2016. Before joining Northeastern University, he worked at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute, the Harvard Kennedy School as a senior research fellow, and at Leibniz University Hannover as professor for responsible research and innovation. His projects have been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the European Research Council, and the Niedersächsischen Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Kultur, among others.
