Dr. Rai Winslow is the director of Life Sciences and Medical Research at The Roux Institute at Northeastern University. He is also a Professor of Bioengineering, and holds affiliate positions at Northeastern in Computer Science & Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences at the College of Engineering, Khoury College of Computer Sciences, and Bouve College of Health Sciences.

Before joining the institute, he was the Raj and Neera Singh Professor of Biomedical Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Winslow was also the Founding Director of the Institute for Computational Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Whiting School of Engineering. In addition, he earned his PhD in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins and holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

A globally-renowned leader in computational medicine, his collaborations with colleagues at Johns Hopkins and other leading institutions, he has made a significant contribution to the emergence and recognition of this medical discipline. This research not only develops data-driven models of disease but also constrains these models using data from individual patients and harnesses these patient-specific models to deliver improved healthcare that is tailored to the needs of the individual.

Winslow’s game-changing research stems from his interests in predictive analytics. To be more specific, he is focused on using statistical and dynamical systems modeling methods to predict the temporal evolution of patient state and to anticipate the impending occurrence of significant changes in patient state before they occur. He is also interested in applications of predictive analytics in both the settings of physical, behavioral and mental healthcare. Additionally, Winslow is intrigued by the development of mechanistic models of disease and harnessing said models for the In Silico discovery of novel therapeutics.

Born and raised in Maine, Winslow is in love with the essence and character of Portland. In his spare time, he can be found either sea kayaking or hiking in the mountains.
