Saiph Savage is an assistant professor at Northeastern University in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, where she directs the Northeastern Civic AI Lab. She also works at West Virginia University designing technology for rural regions. Her focus areas include human-centered AI, gig work, and public interest technology. Saiph recently won a large grant from the National Science Foundation to study human-centered AI meant to empower rural workers and was recognized by UNESCO for her impactful research. In 2018, MIT Technology Review named Saiph among their Innovators Under 35 for her civic AI research. She has won paper awards at top scientific venues in human-computer interaction, including The Web Conference and the Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human Factors in Computing, and the ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing. Saiph’s work has been featured internationally in news sources such as the BBC, the New York Times, the Economist, Deutsche Welle, Vice, and Fortune.Saiph also holds several leadership positions: She is a committee member of the ACM’s Latin American Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction, advises federal governments and presidencies in Latin America, is a fellow at the Center of Democracy and Technology, and is a policy entrepreneur with the Federation of American Scientists.

Before joining Northeastern, Saiph was a tech worker at Intel Labs and Microsoft Bing and a crowd research worker at Stanford. She also previously worked for Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Washington. Saiph holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She has a master’s degree and a doctorate in computer science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
