Am I Part of AI?

“Am I Part of AI” is a blog post series that audits and analyzes large language models (LLMs) to better understand how they engage with culture, whether they can replace search engines, and how we might recalibrate our expectations when using them.
In Part I, Is this AI made for me? Lost in Translation: How Language and Culture Shape AI’s Understanding of Emotion, we examine LLMs’ sensitivity to culturally specific emotions. How well do they simulate users from different backgrounds? How responsive are they to variations in input? And what should we expect when interacting with them in our native—especially non-English—languages?
In Part II, Is this AI made for me? When the Map is the Territory: How AI May Be Reinforcing Geographic Inequality, we test LLMs as search engines, asking them to recommend places to live, travel, or start a business. We compare different models, analyze the types of locations they suggest, and reflect on what this reveals about the broader knowledge ecosystem, especially as reliance on LLMs grows.
Coming soon in Part III of Am I Part of AI series: a look at how AI is reshaping search engines and how their evolving design both helps and hinders how we navigate the world’s information. Subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know when it's available.
