Institute to Play Central Role in AI in Action Week

The Institute for Experiential AI is excited for Northeastern University's AI in Action Week, in which university experts will host a series of lectures, interactive sessions, and trainings for students across the Northeastern University network beginning April 1.

The event is a perfect fit for our Institute, which strives to stay on the cutting edge of AI’s rapidly evolving landscape and counts education, training and upskilling among our core offerings. 

Institute faculty and researchers will be hosting insight-packed talks throughout the week, and we’re also hosting an AI career fair on campus April 4 to connect leading companies with Northeastern University students and researchers. The fair will feature talks by industry leaders on the most in-demand skills in their sectors, details on their day-to-day work, and advice for job-seekers.

Below is a full rundown of the Institute’s events. You can sign up for all the talks here.

Monday April 1 (Opening)

6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. EST

  • NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Fellow Steven Chien will deliver the opening keynote address “Artificial Intelligence in Space and the Hunt for Extraterrestrial Life” on the Boston campus on the 8th floor of the EXP building, with overflow space available in Egan 440. The talk will also available be available virtually.

Tuesday April 2 (Bolster Your AI LIteracy)

6:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. EST

  • Executive Director Usama Fayyad presents “A Brief History of AI” on the Boston campus in the Behrakis Health Sciences Center room 010.

6:45 p.m. - 7:20 p.m.

  • Executive Director Usama Fayyad presents “The Secrets to Making AI Work” on the Boston campus in the Behrakis Health Sciences Center room 010.

6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m.

  • Senior Research Scientist Walid Saba presents “Large Language Models and ChatGPT: What They Are and What They Are Not” in a virtual session.

7:30 p.m. - 8:50 p.m.

  • Director of Research Ricardo Baeza-Yates presents "Irresponsible AI” in a virtual session.

Wednesday April 3 (AI For Professional Development)

6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. EST

  • Senior Advisor Strategy and Marketing Hamit Hamutcu presents “A Data Scientist, A Data Engineer and A Data Analyst Walk into an Organization” on the Boston campus in EXP room 201.
  • Director of Partner Products and Programs Zach Blattner presents "Prompt Engineering: Maximizing Co-op Productivity with AI" in a virtual session.

7:30 p.m. - 8:50 p.m.

  • Director of AI + Life Sciences Samuel Scarpino presents "Effective, Appropriate, and Responsible Use of ChatGPT in The Workplace" in a virtual session.

Thursday April 4 (AI Career Fair and Applied AI)

9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. EST

  • The Institute is hosting an AI Career Fair at the Curry Student Center. The fair will bring together leading companies with Northeastern University’s deep, multidisciplinary talent pool in AI, data science, LLMs, machine learning, computer science, and more.

4:40 p.m. - 5:55 p.m.

  • Research Scientist Ayan Paul presents "Beating The Next Epidemic With AI" in-person at the EXP building, room 204, on the Boston campus.
  • Roux Institute Head of Learning Programs and Professor of the Practice Dan Koloski presents “Putting AI to Work: Experiential Project Showcase” in a virtual session.
  • Core Faculty member David Bau presents “Breaking the ML Black Box” in a virtual session.

6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m.

  • AI for Climate and Sustainability team member Ardeshir Contractor presents "At the Intersection of AI and Climate: BlueTech at the Roux Institute" in a virtual session.

7:30 p.m. - 8:50 p.m.

  • Core Faculty member Byron Wallace presents "AI for Health and Wellbeing: Opportunities and Challenges" in a virtual session.
  • Core Faculty member Saiph Savage presents "Designing Generative AI for Rural Workers" in a virtual session.
  • Core Faculty member Mat Yarossi presents “Artificial Intelligence in Rehabilitation: Advancing the Art of Clinical Practice in the Age of Technology” in person in Bekrakis 325.

Friday April 5 (Closing Plenary Sessions)

12:00 p.m. EST

  • Core Faculty member and Burnes Center Director Beth Simone Noveck will facilitate a keynote talk "Rebooting Democracy in the Age of AI" by Audrey Tang, Taiwan's Minister of Digital Affairs, where Tang will discuss her innovative work leveraging technology to enhance government transparency and digital democracy in a session on the Boston campus in the Alumni Center, with overflow space available in Renassaince Park (RP) 909. The talk will also available be available virtually.
