The Institute for Experiential AI celebrated the launch of our foundational new center for research and applied AI solutions at Northeastern University.

Serving industry, academia, and society, the event featured presentations, interactive panel discussions, and networking opportunities for key communities to address today's most pressing AI challenges and form partnerships to find real-world solutions.

Our goal is to build the top experiential AI research institute in the world focused on developing applied AI solutions, fortifying talent streams, and presenting a comprehensive, integrated approach to AI.

Agenda

9:00 am
Opening Remarks
9:15 am
Opening Keynote
David Roux spoke about the increasingly important role artificial intelligence and machine learning will be playing in the life sciences.
9:30 am
Introducing the Institute
9:45 am
Keynote Address
Lila Snyder spoke about the power and impact AI can have on consumer audio products and experiences.
10:00 am
Panel: Executive Leadership Perspectives on AI in Industry
C-level business leaders discuss the strategic role of AI in industry and how they see it impacting the different sectors they work with. We separated the hype from the reality by focusing on how higher education can help make AI a more useful and practical technology, asking: where do we see AI changing the game across different industries?
10:40 am
Keynote Address: Exploit or Explore? Marketing Changes Everything, But AI Can Help
Marketing has been radically transformed by technology, literally changing the “dimension” of business competition. Rather than focusing on one product or service at a time, broadcasting its benefits, and trying to sell it to as many customers as possible, today’s marketers interact with one customer at a time, trying to sell that customer as many products and services as possible. And today, experiential AI can play an increasingly important role in sorting out the “why” behind any individual customer’s actions, even across millions of customers.
11:05 am
CEO Fireside Chat
11:15 am
Panel: Can We trust AI?
We discussed the ethical issues behind assigning human values—such as trust—to algorithms. Given its limitations, what kind of relationship should we have with AI? How should we design AI systems to improve human life and human intelligence? And if we can't trust AI, who or what should we trust?

Lightning Talks: Academic Leaders
Featuring all nine deans at Northeastern University, these lightning talks provided the foundation for building a strong interdisciplinary community across the university around the critical topic of AI. Our academic leaders will explain how AI can add value to each of their domains, and discuss what different fields can contribute to help make responsible, applicable AI that works in the real world.
2:15 pm
Panel: AI in Health and Life Sciences
3:00 pm
Lightning Talks: Experiential AI for Societal Impact
With over 90 active faculty members, the Institute for Experiential AI is comprised of a diverse team specializing in computer science, engineering, statistics, math, business, to social science, psychology, ethics, law, and many other disciplines. These lightning talks highlight the work of a select few Core Members working on foundations and theory in AI applied to a variety of fields, including health, sciences, cybersecurity, wireless Internet of things, psychology, climate and sustainability, and others.
4:00 pm
Panel: Trustworthy AI
The next frontier of responsibly deploying AI systems is to make AI trustworthy. Building AI systems that are trustworthy and that stakeholders can interact with and rely on in meaningful ways requires incorporating values into the design, development, and deployment of these systems. In this panel discussion, we bring together experts on fairness, interpretability, privacy, and accountability to talk about how to put these values into practice and discuss where we are and where we need to be on the path to achieving trustworthy AI.
5:15 pm
Social Hour
Catered in the East Village building for faculty, leaders, and industry partners.
