Afternoon Keynote: AI in Precision Health - The Role of Venture Capital in Advancing Global Equity and Innovation

The intersection of AI and precision health offers unprecedented potential to transform healthcare, but this innovation must also address critical issues of health equity. AI technologies are driving breakthroughs in drug discovery, personalized treatment, and genomics, presenting opportunities for both public and private sector solutions to reshape global healthcare. In this talk, Geli explored how these advancements are being deployed to tackle pressing healthcare challenges across regions, from Africa to the US, while addressing disparities in access and outcomes. By examining cutting-edge venture solutions and real-world examples, Geli highlighted how AI is transforming patient care and driving more equitable health outcomes. The presentation also explored how public and private sector collaboration can ensure that AI-driven precision health advances are inclusive, scalable, and accessible to all populations, particularly in regions undergoing rapid demographic and health transitions.

Talk: AI in Precision Oncology—a Matching Problem…Perfect for AI!?

Check out the interview and watch the talk replay:

Precision oncology, or the use of biomarker-driven use of drugs, is a rapidly expanding field. It is driven by the availability of readily identifiable drug targets on cancers via genomic technologies and a growing list of new “targeted” agents. Oncologists strive to use this information to design treatment plans for their patients, but struggle with the abundance of biomedical data for identifying the right drug. Matching drugs with the right target should be a perfect scenario for AI technologies. In this talk, Rueter explored what the current issues are with using AI in this context and how to overcome these with new concepts and workflows.

Talk: AI at the Bedside - Predicting Catastrophic Events Using Continuous Data

Watch the talk replay:

Prediction of catastrophic clinical events across patient populations and environments will become standard of care for healthcare providers. For this purpose, continuous vital signs and waveforms from cardiorespiratory patient monitors remain among the most underutilized source of patient measurement data. As an objective indicator of physiology, these information rich time series present a unique opportunity to detect the early signatures of deterioration while avoiding bias. In this summary, Ruchti highlighted recent advancements in the state-of-the-art and provided examples illustrating their potential impact.
4:30 pm
Talk: The Ethics Gap - The Imperative of Responsible AI in Modern Healthcare

Read the recap and watch the talk replay:

Ethics is an integral part of healthcare and medicine. However, with the introduction of AI, the ethics and health landscape becomes more complex. Traditional bioethics, medical ethics, and research ethics, while well-established, do not fully address the ethical issues that arise from the development and deployment of AI in healthcare. AI presents new ethical challenges and without a robust responsible AI framework and implementation, these ethical issues risk permeating healthcare systems and solutions. This talk explored the essential components required to integrate AI ethics into the broader healthcare ecosystem, ensuring that innovation in AI aligns with the ethical imperatives of the medical and health sciences domains.
